Death

Obituary[8]

Funeral services for General W Bruce, 58, locomotive engineer, on the Southern railway, who committed suicide by firing a bullet into his brain, will be conducted from the home, 627 Johnson Avenue at 1 p.m. today, Coster lodge, IOOF, will have charge of this service. Services will be conducted by the Rev. A Cox at 2:30 p.m. at Bishop's cemetery at Heiskell Station. Mr. Bruce had been an engineer on this Southern railway for 12 years. He returned from a regular trip to Chattanooga a few hours before he ended his life. Homicide Chief, T W Day, investigated the death. He was informed that Mr. and Mrs. Bruce had been in bed in a front room at their home. He got up and partly dressed as Mrs. Bruce believed, to leave the house. He went to the dresser drawer and got his pistol. She heard the report of the pistol shot and a moment later found her husband dying from a wound in the head. Bruce had been cautioned by railway officials about running his engine too fast and recently had not been running fast enough to make his schedule. This caused officials to call upon him to speed up.
