Disputed Marriage

There is understandable confusion about the marriages of Nicholas Lawrence, Senr., and his son, Nicholas, Junr., because both men married women named Mary Harris. Nicholas, Senr., married Mary Harris at Dorchester by 1652; Nicholas, Junr., married a later Mary Harris, on November 3rd, 1681 -- also in Dorchester. Following her death, he married his second wife, the widow Abigail Wyer -- whose birth surname, just to confuse matters further, was Lawrence.

Biography

Nicholas Lawrence was born on June 26, 1662 at Dorchester, Massachusetts son of Nicholas and Mary (Harris) Lawrence. ^{[1] [2] [3]}

He is named in the will of his father Nicholas Sr. dated on January 25, 1684/5. ^[2]

He married first Mary Harice/Harris on November 3, 1681 ^{[1] [3] [2]}

He married second, widow Abigail (Lawrence) Wyer on December 25, 1689. Abigail was born about 1662, the daughter of John Lawrence and the widow of Edward Wyer Jr. ^[2]

Nicholas died at Charlestown on February 28, 1711/2. ^[2]

Nicholas wrote his will on February 23, 1711/22, leaving his entire estate to his wife Abigail for her comfortable subsistence, during her natural and for the care of daughter Abigail. ^[4]

His widow Abigail presented the will to the courts on March 19, 1711/2. ^[4]

Their daughter Abigail died at Charlestown on November 5, 1713. ^[5]
