Born in Albany New York October 17, 1815 to Maxwell Strange and Elizabeth McGill. Her father was a merchant and a Scots immigrant. Mary was sibling to James, Elizabeth and Catherine Isabella. Their father died in 1824, followed by their grandfather McGill in 1825, their mother in 1826, and their grandmother McGill in 1827, leaving no one to care for the four orphans. The children were sent from Albany to Kingston Ontario to live with their uncle, John Strange, who was married to their mother's sister, Mary McGill.

Mary met her future husband, Alexander McNabb in 1833 in Kingston, when he was working as a teller at a bank her uncle John was a director of. She married Alex in summer of 1835 (two ceremonies, one in Kingston, and one in Toronto). For the first 16 years of their marriage, they lived variously in Kingston, Toronto and Montreal. By 1851, Alexander became the Crown Lands agent for Bruce County, and they went to live in Southampton, Ontario.

They were the parents of John, Elizabeth, Kate, Eliza, Alexander, Mary Ellen, and a second Mary Ellen. Elizabeth died as a baby in Kingston, Ontario, and the first Mary Ellen at a year old in Montreal.

She lived the rest of her life in Southampton, dying there in 1884.
