Biography

Alexander Leslie Fletcher was born on 19 November 1885 at 22 Norham Gardens in Oxford in Oxfordshire. He was the son of Charles Robert Leslie Fletcher and his wife Alice Katherine Collings Fletcher, born Alice Merry. ^{[1] [2]} He was baptised on 1 January 1886 at All Saints parish church in Oxford, by his grandfather, William Walter Merry. ^[3]

In 1891 Leslie Fletcher was living at 7 Fortfield Terrace in Sidmouth in Devon with his mother Katherine and his brother George. His age was given as 5, implying a birth date in 1885 or 1886. His birthplace was given as Oxford. ^[4]

In 1901 Alexander Fletcher was a naval cadet at Dartmouth. His age was given as 15, implying a birth date in 1885 or 1886. His birthplace was given as St Clements, Oxford. ^[5]

Alexander Leslie Fletcher and Evelyn Mary Van Straubenzee were married at Portsmouth in Hampshire in 1909. ^{[6] [7] [8]}

Research Notes

In the 1901 census, Alexander's birth place was recorded as "St Clements, Oxford”. ^[5] This is clearly mistaken, since he was born in Norham Gardens, on the north side of Oxford. His parents lived in the same house until at least 1911. Perhaps the information was copied from a birth certificate or similar document, which would have mentioned the sub-registration district of St Clements within Headington registration district.
