Biography

Robert Edward Harold Crosbie was born on 24 Jan 1886 in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England to Howard Augustus Crosbie and Ellen Arabella (Scott) Crosbie. His birth was registered in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Scott.[1]

Robert Edward Harold Crosbie of The Vicarage, son of Howard Augustus, Vicar of the Parish, & Ellen Arabella, born 24 Jan 1886, was christened on 21 Feb 1886 in Trumpington - the ceremony was performed by his father H A Crosbie.[2]

In 1891 Robert E H Crosbie (age 5) lived at The Vicarage in Builth, Breconshire, Wales with his father Howard A (46, Clerk in Holy Orders), mother Ellen A (31), and three sisters: Agnes H (4), Eliza C M (3), and Rosalind C G (2 months), as well as four servants: Mary J Wallman (33, Cook), Elizabeth Samuel (25, Housemaid), Maria Marjoram (30, Nurse), and Ellen Wilson (18, Nurse).[3]

In 1901 Robert E Crosbie (age 15, School Boy) was at a boarding school at Northwick Villa, Bath Road in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire - the household consisted of the schoolmaster, his wife, six school boys aged 14 to 17 (including Robert), and three servants.[4]

Robert was a high ranking official in Mandatory Palestine between 1921 and 1948, except for 1926-1928 when he was sent as a government secretary to the Transjordan region.[5]

Robert Edward Harold Crosbie (age 35, Bachelor, Palestine Civil Service, residing at 43 Palace Gardens Terrace Kensington, son of Harold Augustus Crosbie, deceased, Clerk in Holy Orders) and Elsa Sophie Cornelia Muller (age 35, Spinster, residing at Duncroft Kenley, daughter of Frederick Egmont Greman Muller, Gentleman) were married on 28 May 1921 at All Saints' Church in Kenley, Surrey - the witnesses were Fred E G Muller, E A Crosbie, & E Cleary.[6] The marriage was registered in Croydon, Surrey in the second quarter of the year.[7]

Robert and Elsa had two daughters, both born in Palestine:

  1. Patricia Lorelle (Crosbie) Williams (1922-)
  2. Diana Courtenay (Crosbie) Wellsted (1925-2009)

Robert retired to London.

Robert E H Crosbie passed away on 4 Aug 1950, aged 64 years. His death was registered in Westminster, London in the third quarter of the year.[8]

An obituary was published in the Gloucestershire Echo on 7 Aug 1950.[9]

"CROSBIE Robert Edward Harold C.M.G. O.B.E. of 16 Barons Keep London W.14 died 4 August 1950 at Charing Cross Hospital London Probate London 15 September to Elsa Sophie Cornelia Crosbie widow. Effects £6601 14s. 6d."[10]
