Biography

Christian (Elphinstone) Elphinstone Lady Cromarty is a member of Clan Elphinstone.

Christian Elphinstone was born on 19 December 1590 at Elphinstone, Scotland.[1][2]

Christian was the daughter of Alexander, fourth Lord Elphinstone,[3] or Elphinstoun,[4] and his wife, the Honourable Jane Livingstone, oldest daughter of William, sixth Lord Livingstone, and sister of the first Earl of Linlithgow.[5][2]

Christian was the eleventh child of her parents' nineteen children and the youngest of their five daughters:[6]

  1. Alexander, fifth Lord Elphinstone, born 13 November 1577, married 28 April 1607 to Elizabeth Drummond, sister of the Earl of Perth;[7]
  2. Annas Elphinstone, Countess of Sutherland, born 27 October 1579, died at Crakaig on 18 September 1617,[8] married 5 February 1600 to John Gordon, Earl of Sutherland, he died on 11 September 1615 at Dornoch and was buried in the Cathedral there;[9]
  3. James Elphinstone of Barnis, born on 20 November 1580 at Kildromie, aka of Querrell, died before 6 May 1628, married 1) Katherine Gordon, daughter of James Gordon of Lesmoir, and 2) Helen Forbes, the daughter of the Laird of Brux;
  4. William Elphinstone, born 11 December 1581 at Kildrummy, and died there in or before August 1595 when a younger brother was named William;
  5. Jane, Lady Forbes, born 17 February 1582/3, married 5 February 1600 to Arthur, Master of Forbes, oldest son of John eighth Lord Forbes, both living in 1628;
  6. Patrick Ellphinstone, born 20 May 1584 at Kildrummy, and died there;
  7. David Elphinstone, born 20 October 1585 at Kildromie and died there;
  8. Lues or Louis Elphinstone, born on 2 March 1586/7 at Elphinstone, drowned while fording the river Deveron on horseback, on 31 May 1616, interred in the Elphinstone vault at Kildrummy;
  9. Margaret, Lady Bruce of Airth, born 7 June 1588, married to Sir John Bruce of Airth, knight, by contract dated 27 March 1597, to be solemnised before 16 March 1601, both deceased before 1628;
  10. Helen, Lady Cockburn of Langton, born 27 August 1589, married 1) Sir William Cockburn of Langton, knight, and 2) Mr Henry Rollok, minister at Edinburgh;
  11. John Elphinstone of Bannockburn and Warthill, born on 2 December 1591, died September 1621, married Barbara Gordon, the daughter of the laird of Petlurg, and twice widowed, once by the death of Gilbert Keyth of Troup;
  12. Michael Elphinstone, born 16 November and died 24 December 1592 at Elphinstone;
  13. Michael Elphinstone of Quarell, born 23 December 1593, died at Durham and was there on 1 November 1640, married Mary Bruce, the daughter of Mr Robert Bruce of Kinnaird on 15 February 1618;
  14. George Elphinstone, twin, born 12 August 1595 at Elphinstone, died young;
  15. William Elphinstone, twin, born 12 August 1595 at Elphinstone, died April 1604;
  16. Malcolm Elphinstone, born 3 December 1596, died young;
  17. Glaud Elphinstone, born 23 February 1597/8, died young;
  18. Frederick Elphinstone, born 5 September 1599 in the Canongate, died 9 April 1600;

Christian married with a "tocher of 9000 merks Scots", by contract dated 9 July 1606 at the Castle of Elphinstone, which was witnessed by Alexander, Master of Elphinstone; James, Lord Balmerino; Thomas Urquhart of Craigenfintray; George Ogilvie of Coventon; Thomas Ogilvie of Inverquharitie; and David Peart, writer in Edinburgh.[3] Her husband was Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty, the son of Henry Urquhart and his wife, Elizabeth Ogilvie of the Dunlugas family.[10] Henry was the second son of Walter Urquhart of Cromarty, and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Kenneth Mackenzie of Kintail.[10] Thomas was knighted by King James VI of Scotland at Edinburgh in 1617.[10]

Christian and Thomas had six sons and two daughters,[11] including:

  1. Sir Thomas Urquhart, oldest son, born 1611 (5 years after his parents' marriage[11]), knighted by Charles I, King of England and Scotland, in Whitehall Gallery, 1641, died unmarried from a fit of excessive laughter after hearing of the Restoration of Charles II to the kingdom of England and Scotland;[12]
  2. Sir Alexander Urquhart of Dunlugas, died 1661, succeeded his older brother, Sir Thomas;[12]

Christian's mother, Jane, Lady Elphinstone, died on 14 December 1621 at Elphinstone.[13]

On 20 March 1637, Christian's husband, Sir Thomas of Cromarty, was granted a Letter of Protection from all diligence at the instance of his creditors for the space of one year by King Charles I under his Great Seal, and taking him under his Royal protection during the time.[14]

On 19 July 1637, Christian's sons, Thomas and Alexander, were indicted on a charge of "putting violent hands on the persone of the said Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromartie, Knycht, their father, taking him prissoner, and detening him in sure firmance within ane upper chalmer, callit the Inner Dortour, within his place of Cromertie, tanquam in privato carcere, fra the Mononday to the Fryday in the efter none therefter, committit in the moneth of December last, 1636."[15]

Christian's father, Alexander, Lord Elphinstone, died on 14 January 1638 at Elphinstone.[13]

Christian's husband, Sir Thomas, died in 1642,[15] leaving to his oldest son "twelve or thirteen thousand pounds sterling of deb, five brethren all men, and two sisters almost mariageable, to provide for."[11]

Christian, Lady Cromartie,[6] was living in 1652, when her son, Sir Thomas, wrote "IIANTOXPONOXANON or a Pecular Promptuary of Time" the true pedigree of his family until that time.[4]
