Jasper Lewis Gilbert was born in 1809, in Tennessee, United States.

Jasper was a Blacksmith, his real property in De Witt, Texas was valued at $2,000 according to the census of 1850.

Jasper married in in Colorado, Texas on 29 June 1837, Sarah Elvira Lockhart^[1], marriage performed by William Menifee, Chief Justice, Colorado County, Republic of TX. Elvira died before 1850.

Jasper married in June 1850, Eliza Winn (Born abt. 1818 Illinois), in De Witt, Texas,^[2]

Jasper enlisted at Clinton in Dewitt Co., TX, for 12 months as a Private, 22 April 1861 in DeWitt Rifles, Dewitt co. TX, CSA^[4] "they had no arms except a few six-shooters."

It is reported but the info. is unsourced, that Jasper passed away in 1862/3, in Texas. He passed away on Feb 1862, Died in Galveston Battle body moved to National Cemetary, Texas, USA

Research hints/aids

Jasper L. Gilbert came into Texas in 1822 and received an unconditional certificate for land in Colorado County. He later sold this property. Sarah Elvira Lockhart was the daughter of Andrew Lockhart, an original settler in the DeWitt Colony.

Jasper L. Gilbert and Sarah Elvira lived on the many leagues of land in DeWitt County that they inherited from Sarah's father, Andrew Lockhart, and her brothers, Byrd B., John, and Washington. Sarah Elvira died in 1847. Their children, Pleasant Lee and Bartley S. Gilbert were wards of many guardians including Richard Chisolm, originator of "The Chisolm Trail", and were the subjects of many court battles in DeWitt County from 1847 until February 1853 when Jasper L., their father, was finally appointed permanent guardian.^[5]

Jasper L Gilbert's parents' data is elusive, questions abound about data as reported in unsourced online trees, who name them as

• Captain Michael Gilbert (born about 1757- 1759, in St Peters, New Kent, Virginia), and

Sarah (Moon) Moorman Gilbert (abt.1741-bef.1803) Born in Bedford, Virginia to Jacob Moon ^[6], ^[7] Another tree shows her previously MARRIED to a Mr. Moorman.^[8][9]

Another website gives additional, and some conflicting information about her death, "Sally Moon, born about 1760 and married first to Silas Moorman, then Michael Gilbert. Her first three children (all with Silas) are named Pleasant, Martha, and Jacob. She then had several more with Silas, Sally died in Colorado, Texas in 1841." Also is seen here, "SILAS MOORMAN. Allotment.
