John Christie was born in Leith, Edinburgh, in about 1832[1].
His first appearance in official records is his marriage to Margaret Towers in Leith, Edinburgh, on 29 Feb 1856[2]. They had nine children. The first two were born in Scotland. The first, John Towers, was born on 10 Jan 1857 in Leith, Edinburgh. The second, George, was born in Burntisland, Fife, on 21 Oct 1858.
In about 1859 or 1860 the family moved south, to York. Their third child, Alexander, was born in York on 3 Oct 1860. The 1861 England Census[3] confirms that they were living in the Micklegate area of York at the time of the census. Their third child, Alexander was 6 months old at the time. John's place of birth is recorded as Scotland, and his occupation is Engine Fitter. His age is 28.
In about 1862 the family moved again, this time to Hull, Yorkshire. Their fourth child, Thomas was born in Hull on 24 September 1862. At the time of the 1871 England Census[4], on 2nd April 1871, the family home was in the Myton district of Hull. John's name is absent from the 1871 Census for the family household. It is likely that he was away at sea at the time of the Census.
His name appears on the baptism records for his sons George and David, and on the Marriage record of his son Edward.
John Christie died at sea on 17 November 1879[5]. The official record says that he was aboard the Yorkshireman, sailing out of Hull, and that he drowned. The account states that £2.7s.2d (two pounds seven shillings and twopence) was to be paid to his estate[6].
