Biography

Gideon was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph was born on 4d 8m 1770 [4 Aug 1770] in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.^[1][2] He was the son of Gideon and Sarah Howland of Dartmouth.^[1]

He married Mehitable Howland on 28 Nov 1798.^[3]

He commanded whaleships for many years, making profitable voyages, and was later an active member of the firm I. Howland, Jr. & Co., who were agents of whale ships.^[4]

He died on 2 Sep 1847 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts.^[5] He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.^[6]
