Joseph was born on 4d 8m 1770 [4 Aug 1770] in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay.[1][2] He was the son of Gideon and Sarah Howland of Dartmouth.[1]
He commanded whaleships for many years, making profitable voyages, and was later an active member of the firm I. Howland, Jr. & Co., who were agents of whale ships.[4]
He died on 2 Sep 1847 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts.[5] He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.[6]
