They were Not married in Key West. Married at Governor's Island, NY by Rev. J. Elmendorf. The Brooklyn Eagle, Thu, Sep 19, 1850, p. 2. They didn't go to Key West until 1858. That was about the time she left. There are a number of varying accounts in the papers after that as to where she was and when. My interest is peripheral in that I am writing a book about an ancestor, Captain Otis Tillinghast, who married the sister (Elizabeth Wyman) of the man Eliza married (Powell Wyman). Tillinghast and Wyman were three years apart at West Point, but Wyman probably introduced his sister to Otis. Tillinghast died at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861, a year before Wyman. They both had veterans posts named after them - Morrisville, NY and Boston, Mass. I suspect that Eliza may have stayed with Elizabeth in Boston at some point. Eliza's father, Ichabod Crane, was commanding officer at one of the posts Tillinghast served at as quartermaster. Lots of intersections. Lida married Bower Talbot in Manhattan on June 4, 1884. Cert. #33441, NY City Marriage Index. I have other information, but am saving it for a novel about all this. Kent Watkins (646) 234-3545
