Obituary
The Richmond Enquirer, Richmond, VA, Tuesday, 5 Jan 1858, p. 4: [3]
(from The Norfolk [VA] Herald)

Death of a Venerable Citizen. - Died, at his residence, "Millbank," in the county of Mecklenburg in this State, on the evening of Saturday, the 26th Dec., Fortescue Whittle, Esq., for many years a merchant of this city.
Mr. Whittle was a native of the County Antrim, in Ireland, and at an early age embraced the patriotic side of the political dissension which so long distracted that unhappy country. To avoid the persecution of the Government of that day, he came to this country, and settled in Norfolk where he married the only daughter of Colonel William Davies, of the army of the Revolution, the son of the Rev. Samuel Davies, President of Princeton College, in New Jersey. He here embarked in commercial pursuits in 1803, and was largely engaged in commerce during the trying times which subsequently visited our community.
Some years after the war of 1812 he retired to his plantation in Mecklenburg, where he continued to reside, for upwards of forty years, blessed in the society of the wife of his young, (his companion of half a century,) and of a family of nine sons and three daughters, who sprung up around them. Of his sons, one only preceded him to the tomb, dying the death of a hero in the naval service in which he was a Surgeon, giving himself & sacrifice to the cause of duty, of the consequences of which he was fully aware.
The subject of this notice died in the 82nd year of his age, a consistent member of the Episcopal Church, departing peacefully and resignedly, in the full possession of his mental faculties, leaving to his family and many friends no unpleasing recollection (though tinged with melancholy) of the genial warmth of his character, his cheerfulness in the hour of prosperity and his firmness and resolution under adverse circumstances.
