Evelyn Mae (Silva) Arvilla, 89, wife of the late Joseph F. Arvilla, Jr., whom she shared 57 years of marriage, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2014, surrounded by her family. She battled pneumonia for 3 months, hoping to make it home from the nursing home. She was born in Gloucester on January 29, 1925, daughter to the late Albert N. and Lillian B. (Tanner) Silva. Evelyn was a Gloucester High athlete who earned the nickname "Slugger" for her hitting power. She adored the New York Yankees her entire life. Candelpin bowling was also one of her passions; she earned 2nd place in the City Championship during the 1960's. She worked in the Gloucester School Cafeteria System for many years. Evelyn was always a hard worker. Evelyn enjoyed bingo, loved her scratch tickets, and was known to take an occasional drive to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. Trips to Pennsylvania to visit her brother Dick was an annual trek she enjoyed. She was known to be a very giving person to family and friends alike. Mrs. Arvilla endured the loss of two sons, Joseph F. " Skip" Arvilla III and Scott E. Arvilla. These were crushing blows to a mother who so loved her children. She was also predeceased by her brother Albert "Brud" Silva, Jr. and her sister Lillian (Silva) Dennis. Evelyn was a member of Our Lady of Good Voyage Church and the DES Women's Guild. Evelyn and her husband Joe were dedicated GHS band parents from 1976 to 1981. They traveled with the band caring for all the band members and providing guidance and support to the entire program. Evelyn and her husband Joseph donated 2 trophies to GHS Hockey every year since 1972. They were given in memory of her son Joseph F. "Skip" Arvilla III, who died in 1971 in an auto accident. She also was a volunteer at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veteran's Hospital in Bedford, MA. For giving 100 hours of service to the Veteran's Hospital, she was awarded her special pin. She was given this pin at the Seacoast Nursing Home the night before she passed. She was awake and very proud that she had done this for the veterans, having grown up in a family with three veterans. She was a member of the Amvets Ladies Auxillary #201 in Ipswich, MA. She leaves one son, Kenneth A. "Sonny" Arvilla and his wife Carol A. , and one daughter, Sandra J. Arvilla, all from Gloucester. She also leaves her sister Georgia Gadbois of Gloucester and her brother, Richard Silva of Upland, PA. Also surviving Evelyn, are her two granddaughters, Jennifer A. Arvilla of Rockport and Rachael J. Barresi and her husband Will of Lantana, TX. In addition four great grandchildren, Chris Fisher and Ethan Fuller of Rockport and Drew and Camden Barresi of Lantana, Texas and one step grandchild, Robert Stevenson , Jr. of Yuma, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. She leaves many good friends including Marion MacFarland and her very dear friend, Paula Burns of Gloucester, who adored Evelyn. She also leaves one very special family friend, Benjamin A."Punky" Smith III of Annisquam. She will be missed by all that knew her. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A memorial graveside service, in celebration of Evelyn's life is being planned for late Spring; date and time will be announced at a later date in the Glouceter Daily Times.
