- Not to be confused with his purported son, William Gowen (1634-1686), who fought at the Battle of Dunbar and was sent to the colonies under a bond of servitude.
- There is no evidence to support the existence of this man, his father and brother.
- Clearly, William Gowen, his purported son, did exist, but there is no evidence to associate him with this man as his father.

He was not the William Gowen who died in 1786 in Maine. That William was born about 1634 (he was about 51 in 1685; GDMNH, p. 280) and is the man claimed as this William's son. The c1634-1686 William was probably a Scots POW (see his profile for evidence), so unless there is other evidence, this William should be removed as his father.
