Biography

Maj.-Gen. Manners Ralph Wilmott Nightingale was born on the 15th of April 1871. He was the son of Percy Nightingale and Frances Brophy. He married, firstly, Anna Forestier-Walker, the daughter of Arthur George Forestier-Walker, on the 1st of August 1907. He married, secondly, Violet Marion Brunker, the daughter of Lt.-Col. Howard Molyneux Edward Brunker, on the 2nd of October 1930. He died on the 9th of April 1956 at the age of 84.

  • fought in the Tirah Campaign in 1898. He fought in the Boxer Rebellion between 1900 and 1901.
  • fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.
  • was decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1915.
  • was appointed Brigade Commander in 1917.
  • was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1918.
  • was invested as a Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1919.
  • fought in the Kurdistan Campaign in 1919.
  • fought in the Iraq Campaign in 1920.
  • fought in the Temporary Colonel Commandant in 1921.
  • was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1923.
  • again appointed Brigade Commander in 1923.
  • fought in the Waziristan Campaign between 1923 and 1924.
  • gained the rank of Major-General in 1924 in the service of the Indian Army.
  • was Colonel of the 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles (FF), Indian Army between 1937 and 1945.
