Leo Ray Smith, 54 of New Bethlehem RD 3 died December 31, 1977 in the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Kittanning.
He was born March 4, 1923 in Armstrong County, a son of William Spurgeon Smith and Lula (Sherry) Smith.
Leo entered the U.S. Marines at age 22, September 1, 1944 training at Parris Island, South Carolina until Thanksgiving, he came home on a 10 day furlough then transferred to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. He was an instructor in demolition. From there he was transferred to Japan. He was in Nagasaki, saw heavy combat and was wounded. He carried the bullet dug out of him on his key chain. Period of active duty: from 1 September 1944 to 13 August 1946.
He was married to Velma Rosella Polliard.

Funeral services were conducted in the John R. Mateer Funeral Home, New Bethlehem with the Rev. T. Donald Hamilton officiating.
Interment in the Leatherwood Presbyterian Cemetery in Porter Township.
