In 1884 he was nominated President of the Great Southern Railway League, a group of locals pushing for the construction of a railway to Leongatha.[1] He was also a Councillor on the Buln Buln council.[2]
Henry Littledyke constructed a dam in the hills east of Nyora to supply water for the Locomotives on the newly constructed railway to Leongatha. The dam was earth construction. Built without the aid of modern machinery. Henry paid local school children to ride their horses back and forth across the dam wall to compact it.

In an area surrounded by open dairy land, the dam is now part of 64 hectare Henry Littledyke reserve (also known as the Nyora Flora and Fauna Conservation Reserve, managed by Parks Victoria) which preserves remnant vegetation, part of which covered the Gippsland region, and it is a habitat for many native animals.
