Biography

Sir John Sinclair of Stevenson was a merchant-burgess and one of the baillies of Edinburgh.[1] Having acquired a considerable fortune he purchased the lands of Stevenson in co.Haddington, the charter of which can be found in The Great Seal dated 1st June 1624. He later acquired many other lands also, including Wester Pencaitland, Easter Windsheills, the church lands of Pencaitland, &c., in 1630 and 1631. Upon the death of his cousin James Sinclair of Longformacus, he had the gift of the ward and non-entry of his heirs, dated 7th September 1632.[2]

He married Margaret Macmath (of the Newbyres family) and had four known children: one son and three daughters.
