Biography

John O. Wise married Martha E. LNU by 1860 in Bradley County Tennessee. Their daughter George Ann was born in January of 1861. Three months later the infant George Ann died on May 2, 1861. On June 11, 1864, the 22 year old Martha was also buried at Ft. Hill Cemetery near George Ann. The following inscription was left on her headstone:

Sacred to the memory of Martha E., wife of John Wise, died June 11, 1864 aged 22 years. Infinite joy or endless woe attends to every breath. An yet how unconcerned we go upon the brink of death.

In 1871, John's brother Sidney B. Wise was buried near George Ann and Martha E. Wise. Other unmarked graves are nearby and one is likely John's mother, Nancy (Anderson) Wise, who died between 1860 and 1870.

By 1869, the physician John O. Wise had moved to Arkansas. He was married Sept 25 1873 in Hempstead County AR to Mahulda J "Hulda" Grounds. The attached 1880 Census in Hempstead Co, Arkansas Bois d'Arc Township includes the 46 year old physician's second family.
