Patrick was born in 1556 in Perth, Scotland to Andrew Simson and Violet (Adamson) Simson. He was educated at St. Andrews university, matriculating from St. Mary's college in 1571, obtained his B.A. in 1573 and his Masters in 1575. Patrick was then intended to go to Cambridge to continue his studies, but on his journey there became fascinated by a gentleman's library at Brigstock, Northamptonshire where he remained and studied the classics. He was recalled to Scotland as he father became unwell, and Patrick took up teaching of Greek at the Dunbar school where in nearby Spott in 1577 he became minister. Five years later, in 1582 became the minister at Cramond in the presbytery of Edinburgh, and in 1590 he became the Vicar at Stirling, a post he remained in until his death. (in 1596, he was also offered Edinburgh, but he refused). He married Martha (Baron) Simson but after she passed away in 1601, he married a (unnamed) daughter of John Barron/Leslie of Kinnaird and Elizabeth Learmonth. James passed away in 1618 and is buried in the choir at Stirling parish church.
