If his family had successfully claimed the title, then according to Complete Peerage (vol. 9 p. 369) he would have been the 11th "Lord Hastings" upon the death of his father. In Complete Peerage's terminology this hypothetical legal status makes him a de jure Lord Hastings.
Blomefield says "By the eschaet rolls it appears that Sir Hugh died in the 4th of Henry VII. and John was then found to be his son and heir, and being a knight, presented to the church of Gressenhal in 1492, and 1503, and died in the 20th of Henry VII. without issue, and was found to hold this lordship and that of Elsing, &c. of the dutchy of Lancaster."[1]
Carthew mentions that Sir John Hastings was son and heir 22 in 1488, died 12 July 19 Hen. VII. 1504, without heir. He mentions a query that before he died possibly he married Katherine, daughter to Sir Joseph Ash, who seemed to be his widow.[2]
