Biography
James was born 22nd November, 1842. On his death certificate it says he was born in England, though there is some debate as to whether it was Scotland or Ireland. As the death certificate information was provided by his surviving widow, Magdalena Jacoba Schoultz (Barlow), it is presumably what he told her. Exact town is unknown making finding his origins and parentage difficult.
He apparently emigrated to South Africa together with his brother whose name is unknown and date of emigration unknown.
He and Magdalena married on 24th September 1877. C[1]
They had 7 children:
- John Paige (Jannie) (B 20 Nov 1878) - James Charles (Jimmy) (B 15 May 1880) - Johan Frederick (Tennie) (B 1881) - Charles (Charlie) (B 1883) - Maria Aletta (B 8 Jan 1886) - Salomon Johannes (B 1888) - Magdalena Jacoba (B 1889)
James was a stone mason by profession and was one of the builders of the stone harbour wall in Port Elizabeth as well as the Dutch Reformed Church building in Willowmore amongst other projects.
James died 7th September, 1889 on the farm Zandvlakte which is today owned by the Strydom family. [2] [3]
According to family recollections, there were two farms alongside each other. James and his family farmed one and the Strydom family farmed the other. JG Strydom, (who eventually became the prime minister of South Africa from 30 November 1954 to 24 August 1958), and his family, were close friends and neighbours of the Barlows.
