Biography

Elizabeth Scrymgeour, daughter to James Scrymgeour of Dudhope and his wife, Margaret Carnegie. When aged about 15, Elizabeth Scrymgeour was married to John Campbell of Lundie on 4 July 1581 in Dundee by the minister William Crystieson.[1] Her young husband joined his father-in-law on a punitive raid to support Lord Glamis against the Lindsays at Edzell Castle however he was one of the few casualties and died on 11 October 1581. She married secondly to Master John Ogilvy of Powrie later in the 1580's. The date of Elizabeth’s marriage to Master John Ogilvy is not discovered as the document reciting this, dated 18 January 1587/8, referred to the pre-nuptial contract as - November 158 -. [2] Probably during his confinement in Spain, Master John Ogilvy and Elizabeth, his wife, had exchanged letters. Elizabeth was an educated woman and by some strange chance one her letters, probably written after his return, has survived in the Muniments of Ogilvy of Inverquharity. To her goodman, Elizabeth says that she had “left Ogilvy and raid into Dundee” in the afternoon. There she met “guidbrother Robert”. She was planning a meeting of friends of the name of Ogilvy at the Kirk of Auchterhouse which she had often wished him to see. The letter was signed as “Your loving wyf to be good Elisabeth Scrymgeour ”. [3] This brief letter demonstrates that Elizabeth was an educated woman, that the family home was the castle in the Glen of Ogilvy and that as Ogilvy of that Ilk, they took seriously the role of a senior member of that ancient family. Just over the hill from the head of Glen of Ogilvy, the old church at Auchterhouse “was an extensive grand Gothick structure, dedicated to the Virgin Mary”. She survived her husband but died a few years later on 10 December 1613. She was described as Lady Elizabeth Scrymgeour relict of Mr John Ogilvy of that Ilk in her testament. Presumably she was ill throughout her last year as she drew up her will in February when she was sick. Her brother, John Scrymgeour of Dudhope, Constable of Dundee was executor of her will acting on behalf of her young son, Kenneth. [4]
