Henry Butterworth Sr. (abt. 1570 - bef. 1633)

Here are the primary sources that I found most useful when compiling the 4-generation genealogy of HenryA (stayed in England), Henry1 (immigrant), John2 (grandson), and Sarah3 (great granddaughter) Butterworth. The 2014 NEHGR article is where you will find that Ephan Hileley was the wife of HenryA, and Mary Longbotham was the wife of Henry1.

• Austin, J. O. (1887, Apr). Three Generations of the Butterworth Family. New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 41, p 191-194. [This source was used to supplement information from other, newer sources.]
• Holman, Mary Lovering, Helen Pendleton Winston Pillsbury, and Winifred Lovering Holman. (1948). The Butterworth Line (Vol 1, p 254-260). In Ancestry of Colonel John Harrington Stevens and His Wife Frances Helen Miller. [This was the initial source for all information on the vital records of Butterworths after they came to New England. Except where otherwise explicitly noted, it provided the vast majority of supplemental stories to highlight events in family members’ lives.]
• Mower, Lyman. (2004). Butterworth Ancestry (p 105-107). In The Ancestry of Calvin Robinson Mower (1840-1927). Salem, MA: Higginson Book Co. [This source was checked for newer information on the family.]

Martin, David Kendall. (2002). Hannah Bowerman, Wife of Anthony Fry and of Deacon John Butterworth of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The American Genealogist, Vol 77, p 302-312. [This source identified John’s (widower of Sarah ____) 2nd wife Hannah Bowerman and Hannah’s 1st husband Anthony Fry.]

Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society. [This source provided initial information on the family of William Hayward and his wife Sarah Butterworth.]
• Snow, Nora D., & Myrtle M. Jillson. (1939). The William Hayward Family (p 112-114). In The Snow-Estes Ancestry. Hillburn, NY: Privately published. [This source provided some supplemental initial information on the family of William Hayward and Sarah Butterworth.]
• Stott, Clifford L. (2014, Jan). Henry Butterworth of Halifax, Yorkshire, and Weymouth, Massachusetts. New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 168, p 58-61. [Vital records information for the first three generations of Butterfields: Henry, Henry, and John was examined.]
