Biography

Birth and Early Life

Francis Granger "Frank" Hale was born on November 13, 1836 in Greene County, Ohio to Silas and Miriam Opdyke Hale. ^[1]

He appeared on the 1850 US Federal Census, living with his family in Sugar Creek, Ohio. ^[2]

Civil War

Francis enlisted to the Union on July 25, 1861 and served until September 13, 1864. He was a Private, of Company F in the 34 regiment in Ohio. ^[3][4] He ended his service as a corporal. ^[5] His wife, Calista, was named his beneficiary for his pension.^[6]

Marriage and Family

Frank married Calista Barrett Harmon on January 25, 1866 in Greene, Ohio, United States.^[7]

The Hales have five children, but tragically, 4 of them passed away very young. Only one, Mary, survived to adulthood.

Frank, Calista, and their daughter, Mary were noted on the 1880 US Federal Census, living in Dayton, Ohio. He was working as a (house)painter^[8]

Frank was noted on the 1890 Census for Union Veterans, living in Dayton, Ohio.^[9]

Frank and Calista were still living in Ohio when the 1900 Census was taken. They had been married 24 years at that time. ^[10]

Death and Burial

Frank passed away on June 8, 1912 in Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. ^[12][13] He was buried in Bellbrook Cemetery, Bellbrook, Greene County, Ohio (Plot: Sect A, row 4, grave 45).^[14]
