Jane Montgomery was born on 15 January 1766, probably a daughter of Samuel Montgomery (1732–1808) and Elizabeth McElroy (about 1734–after 1770).

Jane married Samuel Shields who was born on 13 March 1764 in Frederick, Maryland. He was the son of William Shields Jr. and Jane Bentley (Williams) Shields. Their children were:

• Ebenezer J. Shields (1788–1846)
• William Montgomery Shields (about 1799–1835)
• Mary Shields (1800–1866)

Jane died on 15 May 1837 in Giles County, Tennessee, United States, aged 71. She was buried in Elk Ridge Cemetery, Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee.^[1]

Research Notes

There are two women, both probably daughters of Samuel Montgomery, who both married a Shields, who have been easily confused and conflated by a number of family histories, books, and websites. Both are buried in the Elk Ridge Cemetery in Lynnville, Tennessee.

Jane Montgomery (this profile) married Samuel Shields. She was born 15 Jan 1766 and died 15 May 1837.

Elisabeth Montgomery married James Shields. She was born Jan 1767 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died 1 Feb 1828.

Unfortunately, they have been conflated into a single profile at FindAGrave for a person called "Elizabeth Jane Montgomery Shields" which has photos of two different headstones—one for each woman.^[1] (A message has been sent to the FG profile manager, so hopefully they will be separated soon.)
