Biography

Elleanore Oleana Thompson, or later just called Ellen, is born to Ole Thompson and his wife Martha Gord in Norway.

I don't know anything about Ellen's childhood in Norway. Where exactly she lived and what her father's occupation was during that time. Any help in researching Ellen's Norwegian roots would be great!

There is also not much I know about her immigration to the US and the little I do know doesn't quite add up. So help in sorting things out would be gladly appreciated! Here is what I do know at the moment:

• According to the research of Al Hotz, which I received trough a letter to my husband's grandmother - sadly without any sources, the Thompson family came to the US in 1868 with five children: Ole and his wife Martha, their daughters Elleanore Thompson and Anna Thompson and their sons Thomas Thompson and George Thompson. The fifth child was Samuel Thompson, on who I have no further information.
• The 1900 Census lists Ellen's immigration year as 1866, while her father's is listed as1875.^[2] Did they not immigrate together? And if not, with whom did Ellen come to the USA? In 1866 she would have been only 15 years old.
• The 1910 Census lists Ellen's immigration year as 1870 ^[3] In 1870 Ellen was 19, so it makes more sense for her to travel without her family, but I still think the version of them all immigrating in 1868 to be the most likely one. I do need sources to proof the theory though!
• Her sister Anna's immigration year is listed as 1867 in the 1900 Census.
• Her brother Thomas immigration year is listed as 1868 in the 1900 Census, but it varies greatly throughout the years: in 1905 it is recorded as 1878 (this one might have been supposed to be 1868), in 1915 as 1872, in 1920 and 1925 as 1871.
• Her brother George's year of immigration is stated as 1872 in the 1900 and 1910 Census and as 1871 in 1925 and 1930.

So far I have not found the Thompsons on a shipping list, nor on a 1870 Census. Both would be very helpful to find out details.

22 Jul 1874 Ellen marries Thomas C. Olson in Ottawa, Lasalle County, Illinois, USA.^[4] Thomas is also a Norwegian immigrant.

Ellen and her husband Thomas stay in LaSalle County. All of their four daughters are born there: Maria Anne Olson in Aug 1875^[5][6], Sarah Matilda Olson in Jan 1877^[7], Anna Louise Olson in Jan 1879 and Nora Olson on 7 Apr 1881.

I have not been able to locate the Olson family in 1880 yet though.

Ellen's oldest daughter Mary marries Thomas A. Warren in Ottawa, La Salle, Illinois on 11 Sep 1893. The couple settles in Wright County, Iowa.

Ellen's second oldest daughter Sarah marries Edwin Dorsett in in La Salle County, Illinois on 10 Sep 1894. They stay in LaSalle, Illinois for some years, then move to Grant County, South Dakota.

15 Jun 1900 Ellen's husband owns a farm in Freedom Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, USA.^[8] Her two youngst daughters, her father and a boarder are living with them.

• Olson Ellen (wife, white, male, born Apr 1851, 49 years, married for 27 years, all of her four children are still alive, born in Norway, both parents also born in Norway, immigrated to the US in 1866, 34 years ago, can read, write and speak English)
• Olson Annie L. (daughter, white, female, born Jan 1879, 21 years, single, born in Illinois, both parents born in Norway, can read, write and speak English)
• Olson Nora J. (daughter, white, female, born Apr 1881, 19 years, single, born in Illinois, both parents born in Norway, can read, write and speak English)
• Hendrickson Jakob (boarder, white, male, born Mar 1885, 15 years, single, born in Illinois, both parents also born in Norway, farm laborer, can read, write and speak English)
• Thompson Ole (father-in-law, white, male, born Mar 1810, 90 years, widowed, born in Norway, both parents also born in Norway, immigrated to the US in 1875, 25 years ago, not naturalized, can read, write, but doesn't speak English)

Ellen's youngest daughter Nora dies at the young age of 19 on Nov 29 1900 and is buried at the Baker Cemetary, LaSalle, Illinois.

21 Apr 1910 Ellen, her husband and their daughter Louise are still living on a farm in Adams Township, Lasalle County, Illinois, USA.^[9] Eventhough the farm is located in Adams and not Freedeom Township like in 1900, I assume them to live at the same farm near Baker, Illinois, which is located in Adams Township, but close to Freedom Township. Also Nora, and later Thomas and Ellen are all burried at Baker Cemetary.

• Olson Ellen O. (wife, female, white, 59 years, married for 36 years, born in Norway, both parents also born in Norway, native tongue Norwegian, parents native tongue also Norwegian, immigrated to the US in 1870, can read, write and speak English)
• Olson Louise (daughter, female, white, 25? years, single, born in Illinois, both parents born in Norway, parents native tongue Norwegian, can read, write and speak English)

Ellen's daughter Louise marries Freeman Bangs in Thor, Humboldt County, Iowa on 26 Feb 1913. After staying in Iowa for a few years, Louise and her family settle in Faribault, Minnesota.

Ellen's husband Thomas dies 16 Aug 1917 and is burried at the Baker Cemetary, LaSalle, Illinois.

Died 4 Dec 1917. in Leland, Lasalle County, Illinois, USA. ^[10]
