Biography

Jeremiah Burroughs was born circa 1651 in Stamford, CT. His approximate birth year comes from Newtown town records. In a 6 Jun 1677 court deposition he was called "a Good twenty six yeares or ther a bout".[1] This is corroborated by Jeremiah witnessing a land conveyance dated 16 January 1665 -- he should have been at least fourteen years old, the age of discretion.[2]

He was the executor for his father's Will. He was also the Town Clerk for several years in Newtown, L.I.[3]

Jeremiah married twice.

Jeremiah married (first) Hannah Way, daughter of James Way. Their children are:

  1. Jeremiah Burroughs b. Newtown; m. 10 Sep 1700 to Cornelia Eckerson; he died bef. 9 Feb 1760
  2. Hannah Burroughs b. Newtown; m. 1st John Reeder bef. 20 Nov 1702; m. 2nd John Furman, on 2 Jul 1711 at Presbyterian Church, Newtown. She died 22 Feb 1732/3.
  3. James Burroughs b. Newtown; m. Nov 1710 in Newtown to Deborah Salyer . He died bet. 1725-1730 at Newtown.
  4. John Burroughs b. Newtown; m.1st Mary Jennings; m. 2nd Elizabeth ___; he died shortly bef. 8 Mar 1774 in Trenton (now Ewing) New Jersey.
  5. Joseph Burroughs b. Newtown, Queens, NY; he died shortly bef. 4 Mar 1766 in Newtown, Bucks, PA. He left a will dated 9 Feb 1760 that mentions his brother John & his children, brother Jeremiah's sons Abraham and other children, Mary Headly and her brothers and sisters, Joseph Burroughs (son of his brother James), Elizabeth Doughty ("if she dye to her sister Martha") . The will does not mention any of his own children, if they exist.

Jeremiah married secondly, between 1697-1698, to Martha (Furman) Reeder, daughter of Josias Furman and Alice Angeleche Beers, as her second husband. Martha died shortly before 16 Dec 1700 in Newtown, Queens. In her will dated 12 Dec 1700 she mentions sons Joseph, Jacob, and Josias Reeder (of her first marriage) and also mentions daughter Elizabeth, underage, and names as executors Jacob and Joseph. The date of her death, and the mention of her previous children, is almost certain proof that there were no children of her marriage to Jeremiah.

Jeremiah was comissioned lieutenant of foot at Newtown on 2 January 1689/90.[4]

On 4 Apr 1691, James WAY, Francis WAY, Jeremiah BURROUGHS, Elizabeth wife of Arthur ALBURTUS deceased, and Martha wife of Thos TAYLOR deceased sell land they inherited from their father James WAY to their brother John WAY.

In 1698, Jeremiah BURROUGHS paid 10s to have his sons John and Joseph schooled. They would likely be between 8 and 16 years of age for this to happen, and they are sons by his first wife Hannah Ray, born before his marriage to Martha Reeder.

Jeremiah Burroughs died in 1698 in Newtown, Queens Co, NY, (he drowned swimming after a canoe). His brother, Joseph Burroughs was granted administration of the estate of Jeremiah Burrough's estate on 25 May 1698 in Newtown. [5]

Jeremiah's son, Jeremiah Burroughs II, was an early settler of Hunterdon,New Jersey Colony.[6]

I would like to see some mergers and changes to this generation of Burroughses. Because it is complicated, I posted the suggestions on G2G:
