THE Johnstons of Elphinstone were early impoverished by a succession of lawsuits. Gilbert Johnstone of Johnstone married Agnes, the only daughter of Sir Alexander Elphinstone who was killed at the battle of Piperdean in 1435. Agnes and her descendants were opposed in her possession of Sir Alexander Elphinstone estates by the male heir who generation after generation carried on a lawsuit up to 1581. These Johnstouns were among the first Reformers.
