Cheltenham Examiner 08 October 1873, page 4:
DEATH OF MR. CHARLES HOGG.
With a very general feeling of regret our readers will read this morning of the death of Mr. Charles Hogg, which occurred on Sunday morning at his residence, Lanesfield, after a long illness, in his 75th year. Mr. Hogg was the younger and only brother of Sir J. Weir Hogg, Bart., for many years Chairman of the late East India Company, but it was less by his social position than by his brilliant conversational powers and bonhomie that the deceased gentleman became one of the most courted members of the Cheltenham Society. His loss, however, will be regretted, not only by the circle in which he moved, but by the far wider circle of friends whose acquaintance he made during the election contests of 1865 and 1868. At the first of those his personal regard for Lord Fitzhardinge, the then Liberal candidate, led him to come forward prominently in the advocacy of the political principles he held, and few who took part in that struggle will have forgotten the vigour and ability with which he threw himself into the fray, or the power of invective and brilliancy of repartee which he exhibited in his speeches in support of the Liberal candidature. The energy which was thus awakened in him did not sleep during the even more determined, but more successful fight of 1868, and it was difficult to realise at that time, as one listened to his stirring speeches, that they were delivered by one who could plead his three-score-years-and-ten as an excuse for leaving the field to younger men. Both in spirit and person his years sat lightly upon him, and he bore even the suffering of the lingering illness which preceded his death with marked fortitude.[3]
His Will (with two Codicils) was proved on 27 October 1873 at Gloucester by Robert Carnall Chapman, of the Oaklands in the parish of Prestbury, and his son George Crawford Hogg, Cheltenham, esquire, captain in her Majesty's 2nd Bombay Cavalry, two of the Executors. Effects under £9,000
