Aarne Harju thought his father was born in Pyh'e4j'e4rvi, Finland. 1

Ilmari's Social Security # was 007-18-1228. His last known address was S. Paris, Maine. 04281. 1

In 1904, he traveled under his mother's passport. The passport lists his occupation as M'f6kkil pka. (cottager's son). Ilmari's daughter in law, Ruth Autio, gave his confirmation date as July 2, 1905. 1

Ilmari worked in the copper mines in Michigan. Ruth tells this story about Elmer. After her father, Pastor Yrj'f6 Autio moved to Wisconsin, his church in South Paris received a very conservative minister. One day, the new minister confronted Elmer and demanded to know, "Are you my teacher?" Elmer replied, "Yes, and capable!". 1

Ilmari's Military Registration Card, dated June 5, 1917 lists his birthdate as March, 1887 and gives his citizinship as Russian. It also states that he works for the Copper Range Co. as a miner...location: Baltic Mine, Michigan. 1

The 1920 census shows Elmer, Fannie, Oliver, Irene Cecilia, Viola living in Hixan, WI where they rented a house. Elmer worked as a farm laborer. The Harjus lived in S. Range, MI in 1911 and 1915; Withee WI (Clark Co.) in 1913 and Baltic MI (Houghton Co.) in 1917. 1
