Biography

Moses Payne Cotham was born on 23 Mar 1849 in Tennessee. He was the son of Christian Malford Cotham and Sarah Susan Pugh. [1]

The 1850 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his parents Christian and Sarah, his brother Cornelius B. and his sister Malvina B. in Decaturville, Decatur, Tennessee. [2]

The 1860 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his parents Christian and Sarah and his brothers Cornelius B. and James Clark in Beat 1, Fannin, Texas. [3]

Moses Payne Cotham married first Nancy May Humphreys on September 2, 1869 in Fannin, Texas. In what might have been a double ring ceremony, Nancy's sister Mary Anne Humphreys married William R. Cruce also on September 2, 1869 in Fannin, Texas. [4] [5]

The 1870 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his wife Nancy in Precinct 1, Fannin, Texas. His occupation was listed as farm laborer. [6]

Moses wife Nancy gave birth to his daughter Willie Mae Cotham on December 5, 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.

The marriage ended when Moses' wife Nancy passed away circa 1871.

(Note: There is a family story that says that Moses hid Jesse James (outlaw) in his barn till he could leave town one time while his father Christian M. Cotham was Sheriff in Bonham, Fannin, Texas. (Supposedly was some blood relationship between Moses' wife Nancy M. Humphrey and a family member of Jesse James) [7]

Moses Payne Cotham married second (Nancy) Catherine Alsee Webster on September 8, 1879 in Fannin County, Texas. [8]

The 1880 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his wife Catherine and his daughter Willie in Precinct 1, Fannin County, Texas. His occupation was listed as farmer. [9]

In 1891, Moses was listed on the Tax Assessment Rolls for Fannin County, Texas. [10]

The 1900 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his wife Catherine, his sons William Cornelius, Jesse Dee, John Hubert, Luther Leslie,Waldon Wheeler and Daniel Homer and his daughter Mamie Myrtle in Justice Precinct 1, Fannin County, Texas. His occupation was listed as farmer. [11]

The 1910 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his wife Catherine, his sons William Cornelius, John Hubert, Luther Leslie, Waldon Wheeler and Daniel Homer and his daughter Mamie Myrtle on Ector and Randolph Road in Justice Precinct 1, Fannin County, Texas. His occupation was listed as farmer. [12]

The marriage ended when Moses' wife Catherine passed away in June 1918.

The 1920 Federal Census listed Moses as living with his son Jesse Dee, his daughter-in law Ada Dona Ann Henry, his grandsons J. B. and Lomis Clotho and his granddaughter Billie Jo on Randolph Road in Justice Precinct 2, Fannin County, Texas. His occupation was listed as farm laborer. [13]

Moses passed away on March 28, 1932 in Savoy, Fannin, Texas at age 83. He had been living in Savoy, Fannin, Texas for the prior two years. [14] [15] He was buried on March 29, 1932 in Hampton Cemetery in Edhube, Fannin, Texas. [16]
