Biography

John Henry White was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1887, the son of Mary Luna. He was adopted by George W. White and May (Jones) White. His adoptive father died in 1902 and John joined the Navy in 1905. He was discharged in 1912. Remaining in California, he married Anita Alviso in 1915. He passed away in 1926 in San Francisco, California.

U.S. Navy: John H. White served in the U.S. Navy from 1905 -1912. He enlisted 14 April 1905. Served on the 1864 receiving ship USS Franklin, he was trained aboard the 1854 sloop-of-war USS Constellation, and served on the USS Pennsylvania (ACR-4) from September 1905 until his discharge in 8 Jul 1908. During his time on the Pennsylvania, the ship was part of the Armored Cruiser Squadron that in October 1905 escorted the USS West Virginia which transported U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt from New Orleans back to Washington D.C. The Squadron sailed in late summer 1906 to Mediterranean waters, and the Pennsylvania was reported to have docked in Port Said, Egypt in 9 Oct 1906 having sailed from Phalerum Bay, Greece. During 1907 the Pennsylvania was part of the First Division of the First Squadron, Asiatic Fleet^[1]. John re-enlisted July 13, 1908 in Denver, Colorado. Served on the USS Wyoming (BM-10; renamed the Cheyenne) from 31 Mar 1909 until 13 Nov. 1909, and the USS New Orleans (31 Dec 1909 - Mar 1910). He was discharged in 1912^[2].

WHITE -- In this city, December 10, 1926, John H., beloved husband of Anita, and loving father of Gertrude White, a native of Texas, aged 39 years. A member of the International Moulders' Union, Local No. 164.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral Monday, December 13, 1926, at 9 a. m., from the mortuary chapel of Julius S. Godeau, 41 Van Ness ave,: thence to St. Charles' church where a requiem high mass will be sung for the repose of his soul, comencing at 9:30 a. m. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery."

Research notes

Father: John's death certificate from 1926 gives his father as George White and Mary "Morales" (actually Mary Coleman who was a half-sister to the Morales family). The 1900 Census shows John living with George W. White (1863-1902) and May (Jones) White^[3], who was his adoptive mother. The will of George White, George W. White's father confirms that George W. was John White's adopted father: "Fifth, I give, devise and bequeath unto John White, adopted son of my deceased son George White, One ($1.00) Dollar."^[4]

Mother:

• Consent of Guardian record for his 1905 enlistment into the US Navy indicates that his grandmother was Anna Morales of 1701 W. Chavez in San Antonio.
• John Henry Whites death certificate gives his mother as "Mary Morales".
• Grandmother Anna Morales had only one daughter named Mary who would have been old enough (~17) to have a child in 1887: Mary Luna.
