Mary Hungerford was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Biography

Mary was born about 1718. Mary Hungerford was the daughter of Edward Hungerford of Blackbourton Court, Oxford. ^[1], "a lineal descendant of the great house of Hungerford." ^[2]

Mary married Paul Elers in 1737 in Alvescot, one mile from Black Bourton. ^[3]

Research Notes

While the DNB says Sir Edward Hungerford's last two marriages were childless, the Victoria County History for Oxford cites a source Mary was his 'kinswoman', and Burke's has her as the da. of an Anthony Hungerford, Esq. Further research indicates this prob. was because her father inherited the estate from his childless uncle Anthony Hungerford, and the title for the property apparently was in some dispute, and her grandfather did have issue from his last two wives, incl. her father, Edward.

Paul Elers, Mary's grandson, writes in his memoirs of visiting his relatives the Misses Blake of Great Russell Street, possibly relations of Elizabeth Hungerford née Blake, wife of Edward Hungerford of Black Bourton. Unfortunately Elizabeth's father, Sir Francis Blake, mentions only one female grandchild in his Will of Aug 17, 1718 and would likely have omitted Mary, even had she been born by then (Elizabeth's marriage being about a year earlier).
