Nicholas Gorges was the third son of Edward Gorges of Wraxall in Somerset and his wife, Mary Poyntz. He held the position of Keeper of the manor of Leconfield in 1570.
Nicholas' first marriage was to Mary, a daughter of Sir Giles Poole. (Note that HOP does not state her given name). His second wife was to Mary Southwell, daughter of Sir Francis Southwell and widow of Sir Anthony St. Leger. They had no children.
Nicholas was Captain of the ship Swiftsure in 1576 and in 1584 was returned to Parliament as member for Boston in Lincolnshire. He served as an admiral at the time of the Spanish Armada that sailed against England in 1588, commanding the merchant vessel Susan Parnell
Nicholas Gorges passed away in 1594, having written his will on the 28th of October. He was buried at St. Martin’s within Ludgate, London
