Served in Revolution. Sortly afterward went to Ashuelot, NH (near Winchester, Cheshire county) along with his brother Eleazer. Both were listed there in 1790 census, along with brothers Francis, William and David. Later Daniel and Levy followed. Nathaniel and 3 brothers were still there in 1795, but Dec 6, 1796 he was made a freeman in Bennington.

An 1805 map of the town of Winchester shows a house marked Ripley at the Lower Ashuelot location, and a Hawkins next door. Also on 1858 map, near woolen mill. Not on 1877 map.

Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution: In 1780, "age, 25 yrs; stature 5 ft 10 in.; complexion, light; engaged for town of Plympton" (Vol 13 p. 349).

Nathaniel Ripley attended Bennington Freeman's meeting Sep 6, 1804. (p. 151 town records.) Also listed is Eleazer Ripley as freeman Sept 7, 1802.

The 1790 census in Winchester, NH has 4 males under 16 listed and 4 females, so perhaps there were more children. Emma Cornog: The free white male was, of course, Nathaniel. The four males under 16 years were Isaac, 11 years old in 1790, Alden, 10 years old, Daniel, five years old, and William, two years old. The four females doubtless were Molly Hawkins and her three little girls, Harriet, Lucy and Amy.

The index to the Harwood Diaries, at the Bennington Museum, has the following entries: Ripley, Nathaniel

VERMONT GAZETTE Jan. 3, 1802 - Died in Weymouth, Massachusetts, widow of Mr. Ripley, aged 104. Letter left at Bennington Post Office for Nathaniel Ripley, Jan. 2, 1800

From Gene Piurkowski, Feb 2004: TAKEN FROM TYPED RECORDS OF DR. JOHN L. ALEXANDER, PAGE 50: "Nathaniel brother of Eleazer of Rochester, Mass m Molly dr of Daniel Hawkins sen Apr 15-1783 b July 11-1762 moved to Win He had lost one b...... [typist couldn't read word...didn't he lose a leg? - gp] from some curse not given. Molly d insane. He m Mary Ormsby and moved to Bennington, Vt. where he died Apr 23-1877 [This date must be a typo (1827?). GP did not make this error himself though. - md] leaving several children."

Emma Cornog, in her notes, mentioned a Mary Ripley who married Oliver Haskins of Canaan, Conn Mar 2, 1834. She suspected Mary was a daughter of either Eleazer Sr. or Nathaniel Sr.

From Gene Piurkowski, 20 Aug 2003, based on looking at Winchester tax records: The tax records seem to be organized in order going down the streets... so you can gather who is neighbor to who and how much land they owned, how many horses, oxen etc they had. In 1795, Eleazer Ripley was listed below Daniel Hawkins and his family. Below Eleazar was listed William Ripley, then Nathaniel (owning no property, just one cow), then Levi Ripley and then Ezra Healy (who lived next to Eleazer in a Daniel Hawkins house). In 1793, Daniel Ripley's name was listed next to Eleazer Ripley. Since Nathaniel and Daniel did not own any property in the county, it appears they lived with brother Eleazer (on his farm) and both soon moved on.
