Biography

Alonzo Rastus Jones, son of Jesse Jones and Mary (McCauliff) Jones, born in Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan, 29 March 1880; died in the Navy Hospital, Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii Territory, 23 January 1934, age 53; buried Diamond Head Memorial Park Cemetery, 529 18th Avenue, Honolulu, Section D, Plot C-57; seaman, painter; married at the Kaiulani Home on King Street, Honolulu, 28 March 1912, Poli L. Kekea, born in Waihee, Koolaupoko District, Island of Oahu, Kingdom of Hawaii, 14 October 1883; died at home, 2714 East Manoa Road, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, 23 January 1945, age 61; buried next to her husband, Section D, Plot C-58.

Alonzo was employed as a painter by the Navy Yard at Pearl Harbor. On 17 January 1934 he fell from a staging area into the dry dock. He suffered intracranial injuries and dislocated wrists. He was attended to at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Pearl Harbor. Complications set in and he passed on 23 January 1934.

About 1911, August. Arrival of Alonzo to the Territory of Hawaii. Alonzo's and Poli's record of Marriage states Alonzo's length of residence in Hawaii was 7 months.[7]

1912. Alonzo's occupation is given as seaman and his residence as boarding at Mrs. Julian Walinaka's home.[8]

1912, March 28. Marriage of Alonzo Rastus Jones and Poli L. Kekea at the Kaiulani Home on King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii Territory.[7]

1913, February 3. The 16th Amendment to the Constitution made income tax a permanent part of the United States tax system. Wikipedia.

1913. The 1913 City Directory has Alonzo boarding at 23 Woodlawn Avenue, Manoa, Honolulu, Honolulu County.[9]

1914 – 1918. World War I. "With five major European nations committed within a few days to hostilities, World War I begins." History World.

1914 - 1922. Alonzo's residence. The 1915 and 1916 directories state Salvation Army Home, mauka side on Manoa Road. The 1917-1922 directories say Manoa Road near Oahu Avenue.[2][10]

1916. Alonzo's occupation is listed as laborer.[11]

1917, April 6. "Woodrow Wilson, president of the USA, declares war on Germany." History World.

1917. The Honolulu City Directory lists Alonzo's occupation as foreman for the Eureka Paint Company.[12]

1918, October 26. Alonzo's World War I draft card[2] included the following.

1918, November 11. "The war ends with the official cessation of hostilities at 11 a.m., the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." History World.

1918 - 1921. Alonzo is working as a painter.[2][13]

1919, January 29. Ratification of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors brought in the period known as the Prohibition. Prohibition ended with the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution in 1933 which repealed the 18th Amendment. History.com.

1922. Alonzo is working as a painter for the J.S. Winvick Company.[14]

1922, May 11. Commercial radio broadcasting began in Honolulu with two stations, KGU and KDYX. Hawaiian Historical Society

1923. This year finds Alonzo living at 3056 Manoa Road in Honolulu.[15]

1923 - 1924. The city directories give Alonzo's occupation as painter.[16]

1924, March. Electric home refrigerators were first advertised, when Kelvinators were introduced locally. These units quickly replaced the old fashioned iceboxes that were common in Island homes. Hawaiian Historical Society.

1924 - 1925. The city directories have Alonzo's residence at 1317 Makiki Street, Honolulu. This area of Makiki Street appears to be east Honolulu south of the H1 highway.[17]

1925. Alonzo is working as a painter for the National Construction Company in Honolulu.[18]

1926 - 1931. The city directories have Alonzo working as a painter for the U.S. Navy in Honolulu.[19]

1926 - 1934. Alonzo's residence is given as 2036 Round Top Drive in Honolulu. The earlier city directories say Makiki Round Top and 2036 Makiki and then 2036 Round Top. These are the same area and are further up the hillside near the Tantalus Lookout.[20][21]

1930, April 8. U.S. Census. The Jones family owning a home on Round Top Road, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Territory of Hawaii, without a radio set. Head of household Alonzo R. 1932 - 1934. Alonzo's occupation is painter at the Navy Yard Pearl Harbor.[1][22]

1934, January 17. Alonzo suffers a fall into a dry dock at the Navy Yard and is brought to the Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor. He suffers intracranial injuries and broken wrists.[1]

1934, January 23. Death of Alonzo Rastus Jones at the Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor. Death due to occupational accident and complications.[1]

1934, January 24. Burial of Alonzo Rastus Jones next to his mother at the Diamond Head Memorial Park, 529 18th Avenue, Honolulu. Section C, Plot C-57.[1][3]
