Jack Darnell was born in Portageville, Missouri on 22 May 1921[1][2][3] to parents, Ruth Lee (Sutton) Wheeler (1893-1971)[4] and Thomas Jefferson Darnell (1870-1940). [5] It appears that the family surname was Darnall at the time of his father's birth, but who at some point changed the family surname to Darnell (see sources below) since all descendants used the Darnell spelling.
In 1930, Jack was 8 years old and attending school, living in Butler, Pemiscot, Missouri with his father, Thomas Jefferson Darnell (59) and Emily Helen Choins (25), whose relationship was listed as wife on the 1930 census for Butler Missouri) (parent status of Helen not specified), and Dola Dean (Darnell) Wheeler (1928-abt.1989) (2) and three boarders.[6]
Jack's father died on 26 Dec 1940 when Jack was age 19.[7]
His WW II Draft registration shows that he was residing in Concord, Pemiscot, Missouri at the time of his 16 Feb 1942 registration, that he was employed by Herbert Henderson, and included a description as 150lb, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and a height of 5 11.Next of kin was listed as Herbert Henderson.[8]
Jack served as a PVT in the US Army during WW II.[2] His enlistment record showed that he was a native of Missouri, lived in Pemiscot County, enlisted on 30 Nov 1944 in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, that he had a grammar school education, and was working as a general farmer.[10]
Jack died on 17 Apr 2001[1][2][14] in Poplar Bluff, Butler, Missouri and was buried at the Dry Bayou Cemetery in Hayti, Pemiscot, Missouri.[2][15]
Research Note
BIOLOGICAL MOTHER's NAME : Ruth Sutton
BIOLOGICAL FATHER's NAME: Thomas Jefferson Darnell.
I cannot find a marriage between the household head and Ruth, his widowed housekeeper with her 4 children shown as borders in the 1920 Census.
Step-mother: Helen Choins
Could someone please check the bio for Helen (Choins) Darnell AND review the timeline and sources to see Helen Choins, Ruth Sutton, and Jack compatabilities . My take is somehow Jack is coming up as the 4th child when they should have had 3. Somewhere it was said that John and jack were the same person (dates seem to indicate they are not) and the bio got written with that belief. Could the 1930 Census be for a different Jack Darnell? Dola is listed in the household which in my mind places this as his record - the Helen as his father's wife doesn't seem to fit. Please feel free to work with the manager on this so that the discrepancy is resolved.
