Biographical Directory of the United States Congress WAKEMAN, Abram, a Representative from New York; born in Greenfield Hill, Fairfield County, Conn., May 31, 1824; completed preparatory studies and was graduated from Herkimer Academy, New York; studied law at Little Falls, N.Y.; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in New York City in 1847; member of the State assembly in 1850 and 1851; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857); unsuccessful Republican candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856; at the outbreak of the Civil War raised the Eighty-first Pennsylvania Volunteers; postmaster of New York City from March 21, 1862, to September 18, 1864; surveyor of the port of New York City; resumed the practice of law; died in New York City June 29, 1889; interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
