Biography

Mary Hungerford was the youngest da. of Sir John Hungerford of Down Ampney, co. Gloucester and Mary Berkeley. She was baptized 21 Jun 1601 at All Saints, Isleworth, Middlesex, England. [1]

She m. William Platt, Esq. (d. 11 Nov 1637) of Highgate, Essex, 4th son of Sir Hugh Platt and his 2nd wife Judith Albany, da. of William Albany of London[2] and (2) Edward Tooker, Esq. of Maddingley, Wilts (c.1602-26 Sep 1688), 1 da. Philippa m. Sir Thomas Gore, of Barrow, Somerset, [1][3] and the stepmother of Sir Giles Tooker, 1st Bt. of Maddington, co. Wilt (b. abt. 1625, d. 17 Mar 1675/6)[4]

Mary Hungerford made her will 16 Aug 1686, proved 27 Sep 1686 and was, buried at Highgate, Middlesex, England.[5][6]

Research Notes

Hoare also mentions Platt was a benefactor to St. John's College, Cambridge which beautified her tomb in 1743. Pretty sure her 1st marriage was childless since his estate was donated.

"...land in Marton-cum-Grafton (Yorks.), 1684; Kentish Town (London), c. 1684, by bequest of William Platt, which formed the endowment of the Platt fellowships; "[7]

Her death date is estimated as 1688 by a few sources, but she must have died Aug/Sep 1686. She's noted as having a da. m. Sir Thomas Gore, and her husband's son and heir Giles is listed as her son in the Complete Baronetage,. but the History of Parliament says they had no children. I think Giles was prob. not her son since he was born c. 1625 while it's pretty clear in her will that Phillippa was her da.

Her will notes a number of relations I have not found yet:

  • Phillippa Gore, daughter
  • Mary Aylworth, da. of her sister Sackville (niece)
  • William Briggs and his wife Catherine, cousin
  • William Gore, grandson 1st son of Phillippa
  • Thomas Gore, grandson, 2nd son of Phillippa
  • Edward Gore, grandson, 3rd son of Phillippa
  • 4 other grandchildren
  • Elianor Glide, cousin
