Biography

John was born in 1830, in Person County, North Carolina[1]. He was the son of Isaac Wayne Hughes and Eliza Ann McLin.

On 24 Jan 1854, in Craven, North Carolina, he married Jane Graham Daves[2]. They settled in New Bern and had the following children.

  1. John Daves Hughes b. 1855 - d. 1879, age 24
  2. Elizabeth Graham Hughes b. 1858 PA - d. 1859 PA
  3. Eliza Ann Hughes b. 1859 - d. 1860, age 8 months
  4. Jane Daves Hughes b. 1862 - d. 1914, never married
  5. Ann Collins Hughes b. 1865 NC - d. 1951 VA, m. Edmond Strudwick
  6. Eliza Ann Hughes b. Oct 1866 - d. Aug 1867, 10 months
  7. Mary Alice Hughes b. May 1868 - d. Jul 1869, 1 year
  8. Isaac Wayne Hughes b. 1870 - d. 1880, age 10

In the late 1850s to early 1860s they lived for a brief time in Pottsville South Ward, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, where he worked as an attorney. He returned to New Bern to served North Carolina in the Civil War.

On April 1, 1862, he was appointed as the Acting Quartermaster of the 7th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry and stationed at Camp Gregg, Virginia. On May 1, 1862, he was promoted to Major at Brandy Station and assigned Acting Quartermaster of Hoke's Brigade. He served through at least 1863[3].

After the war he returned home to New Bern and continued to practice law.

He passed away in 1889, age 59. He is buried at the Cedar Grove Cemetery, in New Bern.
