Frederick Despard was born in Ireland.

Frederick William Despard was born in 1828 (possibly in County Meath, Ireland, but was christened in Gillingham, Kent, England on 5 June 1830[1])[2]. He was the fourth child of Henry Despard and Anne Rushworth.

He was a Captain in the 99th Regiment and married twice; firstly to Rosina Meredith on 7 November 1854 in Cathedral Church of St. Mary, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia[3], and secondly to Harriet Anne Nixon on 19 October 1862 in Newman, Tasmania, Australia[4].

In 1871 Frederick and his family were living at Jersey, Channel Islands, where some of their children were born.

He was residing in Lansdown Place, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire with his second wife and their children at the time of the 1881 England Census. He was aged 52 and a Retired Captain H M Army.

By 1891, Frederic W Despard (aged 62 and a retired military officer) was recorded living at Pittville Circus Road, Donore, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England with his wife Harriett A Despard (56), their children Rosina C Despard (28), Edith S Despard, Lilian F Despard (22), Mabel H Despard (21) and Wilfred H C Despard (15), and three servants.

He died on 18 June 1896 and was buried at Kingston Cemetery and Crematorium, Kingston upon Thames, Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, England on June 20 of that year[5][6][7][8].

His Will was proved on 31 July 1896 at London to his daughter Rosina Clara Despard and William Winson, major general late Her Majesty's Indian Army[9]. Effects: £26261 7s. 9d.
