Notes

1485 -- Andrew Barton, on behalf of his wife Cecily Radcliffe, took possession of Smithills Hall when the male line of the Radcliffe family failed. Smithills Hall had belonged to the Radcliffe family since 1335. In 1335 William Radcliffe had "acquired" Smithills Hall from the Hultons family who had "acquired" it from the Knights Hospitallers. [1]

1497/1498 -- Andrew Barton was born at probably Smithhills, Cheshire, or Smithills, Deane Parish, [Salford Hundred], Lancashire, [now the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester], England. He was the first son and heir of John Barton of Smithhills {sic} and Cecily Radcliffe of Smithhills {sic}. [2]

Cecily Radcliffe of Smithhills {sic} was a daughter and heiress of Sir Ralph Radcliffe of Smithhills, Lancashire, England. [3]

The Barton family was wealthy sheep farmers who owned Smithills Hall from 1485 to 1659. Ownership of Smithills Hall passed by marriage from the Barton family to the Belasyse family. [4]

Andrew Barton and Anne Stanley married at [5] possibly Smithills, Deane Parish, Lancashire, England.

Andrew Barton and Anne Stanley had 11 children: four daughters and seven sons. [6]

March 14, 1549 -- Andrew Barton died at [7] probably Smithills, Deane Parish, Lancashire, England.
