Owen V. Ramsey,[1] Owen Valaraous Ramsey[2]
Owen V. b. 20 October 1845 Wilson Co., TN s/o Richard B Ramsey b. 1797 Dinwiddie Co., VA d. 1884 in Muhlenberg Co., KY and Lucy B Dickerson b.1821 in VA d.1895 in KY.[1] both born in VA according to census data.
In 1850 Dist. 1, Wilson Co., TN, Owen (4) lived with his parents Richard B. (53), Lucy B. (30) and siblings Thomas H. (14), James B. (12) and Robert L. (3).[3]
Owen had five half brothers and a half sister born to Richard B Ramsey and Harriet New before her death abt. 1839. Owen and his brother Robert moved to Muhlenberg County Kentucky in the early 1850s with their parents Richard and Lucy. Their sister Mary Catherine Elizabeth was born in Muhlenberg County in 1856. The children of Harriet remained in Tennessee.[1]
In 1860 Dist. 2, Muhlenberg, KY, Owen (14) lived with his parents Richard (62, farmer), Lucy B. (37, keeping house), Robert L (13) and Mary E.C. (3). Owens real and personal estates were valued at $300 each.[4]
Owen Valaraous Ramsey enlisted in the CSA as a private 15 Aug 1862 Hartsville, TN and joined the 2nd Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry (Duke's), Co. K, and served there the entire war. His Regiment surrendered abt. 15 Apr 1865 Washington GA[2][5] although it's been reported that Basil Duke and his cavalry command entered Woodstock, Georgia on May 8, 1865. Before surrendering to a larger force of Federal cavalry, these Confederate cavaliers gathered into ranks for one last formation of "Morgan’s Raiders".[6] Owen wasn't present for the surrender because he was in prison at Rock Island, Illinois after previously being captured 14 Jun 1864 and held by Federal forces. He was released 18 May 1865 (date of 1864 incorrect on record).[2]
On July 28, 1867 Black Jack, Robertson Co., TN, Owen V. m. Caroline Harding Drane Traughber[1][7] d/o Thomas Harding Drane b. abt. 1797 Montgomery Co., MD d. aft. 1860 Sumner Co., TN and Malinda Sumner b. 26 Jan 1808 TN d. 31 Jul 1867 Logan Co., KY.
On 26 Jul 1870 Adairville, Logan Co., KY, the Ramsey family consisted of Owen V (24), Caroline H (37), Thomas R Ramsey (2mo.), Mary M Traughber (14) and Sarah E Traughber (11). Owen was a farmer, Caroline keeping house, Mary waits in house, Sarah attending school and both girls attended school within the year. All adults could read and write English. Their personal estate was valued at $200 and their real estate $200. All were born in Kentucky except for Owen (TN). Family names living nearby were Hooper (William, Susan, Margaret, William, Woodward, Lacy and Graham), Proctor ( Ellen, Melissa, William, Robert, Margaret).[8]
On 02 June 1900 Adairville, Dist. 41, Logan Co., KY., the Ramsey family consisted of Owen V. (55), Caroline H. (66) and Caroline's grandson William Proctor (21, single). Owen b. Nov 1844 TN father b. VA mother b. VA m. 37 years (should be 33 years); Caroline m. 37 years (33 years) b. Aug 1833 KY father b. MD mother b. KY and had 4 children, 3 living. William b. Mar 1879 KY, father b. KY, mother b. KY. Owen was a house carpenter and no occupation was listed for Caroline and William. All could read, write and speak English. Their house was owned outright. Living nearby were two Traughber families: 1. M. R. Traughber (39, head), Sallie (30, wife), Joseph (46, brother) with two boarders Amelia and John C -- 2. R. D. Traughber (33, head), M.N. (30, wife), Moosie (9. daughter) and John (7, son).[9]
Owen V. d. 08 Jan 1903 Adairville, KY and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Adairville, KY.[1]
