Biography

James Naesmyth of Posso was the eldest son of Thomas Naesmyth of Posso and Joanna Veitch.[1]
In 1602, his grandfather Michael Naesmyth gave him his estates with the provision that he paid his grandfather a yearly sum during his grandfather's life time. At the same time Michael Naesmyth made provisions for John Naesmyth, a brother of James Naesmyth. Also mentioned were two daughters of Michael, Katherine and Jane.
He served as Sheriff-depute of Peebleshire in 1624. He was a member of Parliament for Peeblesshire in 1627. From 1630 to 1639 he was a member of Parliament for Perthshire.
He was heir to his father Thomas Naesmyth in 1609, and heir to his grandfather Michael Naesmyth in 1611. This gave him half of Posso; he acquired the other half by purchase in 1617.
He married Agnes Burnet, daughter of William Burnet of Burns, in 1610. He was sometimes in litigation with his brother-in-law William Burnet of Burns who called him "Old Posso" to distinguish him from his son.
