Biography

The earliest record we have of John Callahan is the 1870 Census. He was working as a hostler (groom) for Leonard McDonald, a lime merchant, in Queensbury, Warren, New York, USA. He, 23 years old, was born in Ireland.

John married Hannorah Reidy on 20 April 1871.

In the 1880 Cesnus we find that John and "Nora" were living on Walnut Street in Queensbury (now Glens Falls) with their children: Dennis, age 8; Martin, age 5; Jerry, age 3; and Gertrude, age 1. John worked as a coachman.

Sometime after that, but before his death in 1888, John became a businessman. He owned a grocery store on the corner of Lime and Canal Streets in Glens Falls, New York. The family homestead was at 8 Delaware Street in Glens Falls.

After John's death, the family continued to live there. Gertrude and her husband Michael O'Rourke lived in the family homestead until it was torn town for urban renewal in the late 1960's. My wife remember visiting the O'Rourkes in the house. In fact we have a washstand from the Callahan house.
