Biography

Gilman was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, in 1842, the son of Gilman Page and Eliza Bidwell. Named for his father, he moved with his family to neighboring Malden, Massachusetts, in early childhood[1] and remained there throughout his life.

When the Civil War broke out, he and his brother Gilbert both enlisted and served in the same regiment. Gilman was 19 when he enrolled on April 30, 1861. He entered as a private in Company K of the Mass. 17th Infantry.[2] He was promoted to Full Corporal and then Full 2nd Lieutenant on December 7, 1863, when he was commissioned into Company E of the US Colored Cavalry[3] (it was a common practice for white officers to be commissioned officers in the colored regiments). He was with that regiment at Fort Monroe, Virginia, on December 30, 1863.[4] He earned the title of 1st Lieutenant on March 10, 1864, and mustered out February 4, 1866, having served almost 5 years.

After the war, he returned to Malden, where he found work as a painter. He lived with his parents in 1880[5], with 15 year old niece Lida Page. He married in 1886 to Lizzie Stevens, daughter of William and Olive Stevens[6]; they had 2 children. By 1910, he was employed as superintendent of the water department for the city of Malden.

Gilman died in 1927.[7] He was buried at the Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden.[8]
