Biography

Birthplace according to his son's John and Michael's birth certificates is County Clare, Ireland. Occupation according to his son's death certificate was Farmer.

Marriage Certificate details: John’s occupation: Farmer; Margaret’s: General Servant. Both residing in Diggora. John is aged 30; Margaret is 23. Birthplace for both is County Clare (no townland/parish noted). John’s parents: Michael Mooloney [sp], Blacksmith and Bridget Green; Margaret’s: John O’Toole, Farmer and Margaret Rear?y (can’t read). John Maloney presumed illiterate? Next to his name is a cross with “his mark” next to it. Witnesses: Pat Moloney and Bridget Molony [various spellings].

Wife's 1924 death certificate states she was married to John for 21 years - they married in 1878. Perhaps he died 21 years after marriage date = about 1899?

Margaret's death certificate also lists children: Annie (dead); John 43 years; Margaret 41 years; Michael Joseph 39 years; James Michael Patrick 37 years; Bridget 35 years; Elizabeth (dead).

Since it is likely that John and his parents were illiterate and probably could not write or spell their own names, a tally has been made of the spelling of John's descendants MALONEY vs MOLONEY in BDM records. He registered the majority of his children's births as "Maloney" (and most of them in turn carried on this spelling), so have gone with this spelling for the family name. Also, as shown below Maloney was the most commonly spelt variation outside of Ireland.
