In 1860 they lived right next door to his parents in Lincoln, Tennessee, with their first child, Martin. John D. was a mechanic and his wife was a seamstress. [6]
The Prestons, the Hills, the Walkers, and the Gaults were neighboring families. Children of all five families would marry Busbee children, not yet arrived from Walker County, Alabama.
John fought in the Civil War as a Confederate.[7]
He served in Turney's Brigade, but after only a few months was injured (shot in the thigh) and then became deathly ill from the injury. He was discharged from service due to his injury and illness.[8]
John's service and injury explains the long stretch without additional children in the family.
By 1870 their boy Martin was no longer an only child. He had a six-year-old brother and a year-old sister. Martin was 17 and married at the time of the census. He and his bride, Vicy Jane Busbee, were living with John D. and Delia, along with the two younger children.[2]
In 1880 they were still in Lincoln County, with additional children and John's widowed father.[3]
By 1910 all of the children had grown up and flown the nest. John and Delia were counted in Lincoln County.[9]
John David Taylor died in Lincoln, Tennessee in 1916[5]
and is buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in Lincoln County.[8]
Research Notes
On John's date of birth:
Please note that John Taylor suffered from senile dementia at his death, which would have affected him for years.[5] The death certificate informant, apparently his youngest son, Robert, while stating John's age at death was 90, filled in his date of birth as "God only knows." In census records for 1860, John's and his wife's estimated dates of birth were both 1835; in 1860 they were 1834 and 1835. Then by 1880 he appears to be seven years older than Adelia (1828 and 1835), and by 1910 he appears to be 13 years older.
