Biography

Occupation: Privileged Citizen (Burgher) of Prague. Military career 1808-14: Officer in the Kingdom of Italy Army. Later: Entrepreneur/Owner of meat production business. BET 1808 AND 1814. Prague, Czech Republic.

Note:

Born in Lombardy. It was a part of the Duchy of Milan until 1796. Under Napoleon Bonaparte, Lombardy became first the Centre of the Cisalpine Republic and then in 1805 the Kingdom of Italy. A.U. served as an officer (rank unknown) in the Italian Army (under General Eugene de Beauharnais) from 1807 till 1814. In 1809, he took part in the battle of Wagram (near Vienna), in 1813 fought in the battle of Lutzen (near Leipzig).  After Napoleon's defeat in 1814, Lombardy became a constituent of the Austrian Empire as the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. A.U. who was from a minor noble family and had apparently some financial means moved in 1815 permanently to Prague, Bohemia, Austrian Empire. He established a highly successful meat production business (based on then famous Italian smoked, cooked and cured products) and owned the house and adjacent property at  Prague - Old Town, Rybna 3650. Until 1870, Rybna St. in this section was known as Koenigshof Gasse. He married Marie von Laretz who was  from a minor noble family of Czech-German origin. They lived with their many children on the second floor of their large Rybna house. The business premises were on the ground floor and in the backyard area. A.U. became the Privileged Citizen (Burgher) of Prague, a supporter of the Czech National movement and many good causes. A.U. was fluent in Italian, German, Czech and French (also some Spanish and English).

 

Property 650/3: In the 14th century owned by Jan Rotlev; later a hospital, bought in 1770 by Ignac Binder. As in 2017, the building is still there.<p>.
