The Visitations of Worcester 1569 for Clare and Warwick 1661 for D'Abbetot, along with the BHO "Parish of Croome d'Abitot", all having Margaret (d'Abitot) Rice as the dau. and heire of John or Johanes d'Abitot. These Visitations also show John (Johanes) as son to Sir Godfrie (Gefferey) d'Abitot ...
Croome d'Abitot
From "Parishes: Croome d'Abitot" (BHO):
... Joan Verney, who presented to the church in 1452, was perhaps the widow of one of the D'Abitots.[1] It is probable that after her death the manor was divided among the heirs of William D'Abitot, who were apparently descendants of another branch of the D'Abitot family, for among the four persons who presented jointly to the church in 1467 was Thomas Rice,[2] who is said to have married Margaret the daughter and heir of John D'Abitot.[3]
From Blechingley: a parish history - the family of De Clare:
A Nicholas Clare at the end of the fifteenth century married Margaret Rice, who through her grandmother Joan d'Abitot brought the manor of Croome d'Abitot in Worcestershire to her son Gilbert Clare in 1531, the d'Abitots having held Croome since the middle of the twelfth century;[4]
The above quote from a parish history of Blechingley (Clare), suggests that Croome was inherited through "Joan" d'Abitot, a supposed grandmother, rather than "John", the grandfather, as the other sources show ... This could possibly be a mistake, misinterpreting "Johanna" for "Johannes" ... It is of course, also possible that Joan was the name of John's wife. I'll keep looking.
